Whether you call it blackjack or “21″, you’ll call it more fun when you play blackjack at an online casino. Online casinos offer all of the blackjack action of physical casinos but none of the distractions and additional expenses like food, beverages, hotel rooms and gasoline. You get real blackjack casino action and 100% of your bankroll can be dedicated to playing the game.
Blackjack rules can vary widely between online casinos so it’s a good idea to read the online blackjack help page before you begin playing.
Depending upon the rules of when a dealer can hit and when the dealer must stand, the house edge for online blackjack can vary between a low of 0.18% to an amazing high of 0.93%. Since you don’t want to be playing blackjack at an online casino where the house wins 93 out of every 100 hands, you really need to pay attention before you plunk your money down.

Although many people still play the “standard” version of Blackjack or “21″, there are several variations which are becoming popular at more and more online blackjack casinos these days.
One of the more popular online casino blackjack games is called “Blackjack Switch.”
Although it is very similar to standard blackjack there are some subtle differences and features that make the game more interesting. The most notable feature is the fact that a player can actually trade cards between two open hands which, in effect, giving him the ability to create his own winning hand.
The player is required to make to equal bets before the cards are dealt. The dealer then gives each player two cards face up. The players can then switch the second card that was dealt to each hand if it will result in a better hand for them.
Besides this obvious feature, there are some other differences between standard online casino blackjack and Blackjack Switch played online.
* Blackjack Switch is played with 6 decks in the shoe.
* The dealer is permitted to hit on a soft 17.
* A player is permitted to double-down on any two cards.
* Players are permitted to double after a split.
* Players are not permitted to split a split.
* Blackjack pays even money.
* All players lose their entire wager when the dealer has a blackjack.
* If the dealer’s cards total 22 it will be treated as a push against any player who is holding 21 or less. A player blackjack beats a dealer’s 22.
Other variations of online casino blackjack include “Pontoon”, a version of blackjack that’s popular among the British, and Caribbean 21 which has a set of rules that’s so different that many people don’t even think of it as Blackjack.
But no matter which online casino version of blackjack you choose, you’re sure to have a good time without ever having to leave your home. Online casino blackjack is your best bet. Good luck!
It’s been described with such superlatives as “Mad Max meets Disneyland”. Many have tried, and failed, to liken Burning Man to other festivals around the world; parallels have been drawn to Woodstock, the legendary rock festival that famously got out of hand when thousands crashed the gate and the heavens opened to douse the whole event with heavy rain.
England’s much celebrated three day festival of music and arts – Glastonbury, has also been compared to Burning Man, and though it is probably the closest contender that exists, the concept is very different to that of Burning Man. The truth of the matter is that Burning Man is a completely unique event, the likes of which the world has never seen before.
Every year, for five days, some 50,000 people make their way to the flat, parched playa of the Black Rock Desert, 120 miles north of Reno in Nevada. They come to form a temporary community, named “Black Rock City” that is dedicated to self expression and radical self reliance. Unlike other festivals – Burning Man is a commerce-free event; there are no burger vans, no bars, and no shops, in fact there are only two things for sale in Black Rock City: coffee, and ice, both of which are found in the Centre Camp. Everything else (food, water, and shelter) has to be brought in, or traded for.
Black Rock Desert can be an unforgiving place and is subject to extremes; by day temperatures can exceed 37C, yet by night they can drop down to around freezing. Thunderstorms and dust storms can arise with little notice, transforming the playa into one massive mud puddle in a few minutes. With no trees or natural shelter, winds average 25mph under normal conditions and can rise to 70mph during a storm.
Unlike other festivals where the entertainment is laid on by the organiser – at Burning Man it’s the festivals’ own punters that are the entertainment. There is no main stage, no comedy tent, no dance arena. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the creative culture of Burning Man by providing entertainment for others, whether it is in the form of amplified music, theatre, performance art, sculpture – at Burning Man – pretty much anything goes.
Travellers from all over the States, and the rest of the world, descend on Nevada every year to be part of this bizarre festival. En route – many spend a night in hotels in Carson City, Reno or other nearby settlements, grabbing their chance for a night in normal civilisation before heading deep into the desert the following day.
What the future holds for Burning Man is unsure, but the steady growth of this unique event is likely to continue to attract tens of thousands each year, as long as the motto of the festival remains true:
“We will always burn the man”.
An “interview” with the “untitled” horse piece in front of the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Nevada.
Hi, my name is Morgana. May I interview you?
“Mmm, sure.”
Folks, I’m standing in front of the Nevada Museum of Art interviewing an untitled horse piece. Do you have a name?
“I call myself Man. (laughs) This is funny, as I am female. I was grazing on some marijuana, forgot exactly where it was, when I had a conversation with a Burning Bush off to the side. We were discussing Gombrich. That’s how I discovered my name.”
Ok, tell me about yourself.
“I was installed here in 2003. Isn’t this building here (the Nevada Museum of Art) just awesome?! I love the neighborhood. I’m part of the Reno Arts District and Truckee River Walk. Reno took an ordinary neighborhood and made it extraordinary. I’m tall at 7′11″, 10′7″ long and a svelte 3′6″ wide. Unlike Man, I know my Creator. Deborah Butterfield, born 1949. She cleverly made me to look like sub-bleached sticks, but underneath I am cast bronze. The wood original was burned out in the process. My patina is wood-like to one very eye-fooling effect. Ms. Butterfield says horses are all she has been interested in since she was old enough to think. She says horse images are a self portrait one step removed.”
So, you know about Gombrich?
“Oh yeah. Gombrich is interesting. According to Gombrich, the role of ambiguity in the interpretation of art and reality is to teach us to see, in spite of the fact that ambiguity itself cannot be seen. Gombrich discussed that all images are ambiguous, i.e., each can be given more than one interpretation; as well as the extent to which we interpret into that which we don’t know the meaning. For example, the images we see in the constellations, the clouds or on the rock wall. We are always the authors of that projection of interpretation, and we usually embody ambiguity with meaning. We do it as the artist as creator, and also, as the beholder of the artist’s creation. One needs the other. Gombrich emphasized this interpretation as a tension between the conceptual and the particular, because throughout the history of art, there is a pull back to the conceptual and away from the particular.”
Are you conceptual or particular?
“You are a human being. That means you are a superb author of projection and the vesting of meaning into that which has two or more possible meanings. Or, into an image or truth that is not clear with meaning, that is indefinite, uncertain,

CORNER OF RALSTON AND VINE
Reno is a transient town. The people who stay, the old timers, they’ve told me in so many bars and so many words the same thing about the place. People come to Reno to hide from something, to get out of debt, to get married, to get divorced, to shove their money into an unforgiving, blinking machine. Reno is the patron city of low-down stragglers, highway hobos, wayward prophets and underage sweethearts. Sin City’s nubile little sister, so to speak…downtown’s the only real shady side to the place, the rest of Reno is really beautiful.
What I like most on the way to school is to be stopped by the train. The train and I have similar schedules, and it makes me late for French at least twice a week. The train always stops me right in front of the Sands. The Sands is a gaudy throwback to 1950’s casinoland. On a hot summer day when the sky is so blue it hurts, the bright yellow Sands against this backdrop with the train passing by provokes the craziest feeling of holy inspiration. The train makes me late, but I wait in reverence, thinking at least someone is going somewhere else. I love how the train passes by the Sands, the temporary angles they create together against the sky, and I love my coffee and the rings of smoke in my car that I shouldn’t smoke in, but the Day and the Sun and the Sky and The Sands! Later, I will try to explain this in broken French to my dispassionate teacher: mais madame, le soleil et le jour, et le casino, tout ensemble!
Other than admiring their ravishing, seedy aesthetics from the outside, I mostly stay away from the casinos. I’m a broke grad student and if I lose $5 I get mad. But I digress. Another thing I like about the train crossing is the vagrants. I wouldn’t call them bums, exactly. I see bums as sedentary, and vagrants as somewhat more mobile. I suppose that a vagrant is a bum on the move. The particular ones in question walk from one side of Ralston to the other. I wonder, as I watch the train pass by the sands, and the yellow of the casino melting into a cerulean infinity, where they go. They just cross the street and disappear into some corner. When I return from class, they’re still there, walking about. I like the Ralston Walkers, as I’ve named them. I probably should feel sorry for them, or feel revulsion, or feel anything other than a benign curiosity, but I think that they have their patterns and I have mine. Instead of walking from one side of the street to the other, I walk from my couch to the kitchen to outside to 7-11 to schoolandworkandback. Sometimes I get stopped by the train, and I realize that some vagrants really know how to live. Their secret is to keep moving, even if only back and forth from one side to the other on the same street.
Horses are an important part of Nevada culture. Many residents own their own horses, and the state boasts the largest population of wild horses in the country. In Nevada, good horsemanship is a heritage that is taken seriously.

Anyone looking for a game that is both simple and exciting, blackjack seems the natural choice. Also known as Pontoon or Vignt Un, this is a popular game at traditional casinos as well as at online casino sites. There are many versions of blackjack, although the basic game comprises of the same idea – for the player to reach as close to the number 21 as possible, without going over that amount. Blackjack is played against the dealer and the other players at the table are of no importance to the outcome of the player’s hand. It is important to note that because of the differing rules and regulations between casinos, and the variants of the game of blackjack, players should take time to read the instructions of each game carefully before playing for real money.
How to Play Blackjack
The Basics
Blackjack can be played with one, two, four, six or eight decks of cards.
Players need to get as close to the number 21 as possible, by beating the dealer’s hand and not going over this sum.
Bets are placed before the game begins.
The value of the dealt cards are added to reach 21 or nearest.
The skill of blackjack lies in the ability of the player to choose whether to be dealt another card to get nearer to 21, or to stand with what he has.
Card Values
The suits in blackjack are of no consequence. Face cards (ie. King, Queen and Jack) have a value of 10, while the cards ranging from 2-10 have face value. Aces are either valued at 1 or 11, depending on the hands being played. A hand that does not have an Ace or where the Ace is counted as one is known as a hard hand, while a hand that consists of an Ace that counts as 11 is known as a soft hand.
The Beginnings of a Blackjack Game
Players begin a game of blackjack by finding a suitable table. Blackjack tables traditionally seat six people. Important things to look out for at a suitable blackjack table include minimum and maximum wagers, deck sizes and variant rules.
Bets are placed in a special area on the blackjack table.
Once the bets are placed, each player is dealt two cards and then the dealer takes two cards for himself. In most variants of blackjack, the player has one card facing up and one card facing down.
If a player believes that the dealer has been dealt a blackjack (21), he can take out an insurance bet at this point in the game. All bets will be cleared and the player will be paid out 2:1 if the dealer has been dealt a blackjack. If not, the player loses the insurance bet.
In most cases, players are dealt cards face up and should thus not handle the cards.
Once players see their two cards, they are faced with the decision of how to proceed in the game. Herein lies the skill element of blackjack: To take more cards to reach the number 21 and risk going ‘bust’ (ie. going over that sum) or to stay with what they have been dealt and hope to win with that amount.
The Options Available to Blackjack Players
The following are the choices available to blackjack players at this stage of the game:
Players can Choose to ‘Hit’: This is when players choose to ask the dealer for another card as they think they can advance further towards 21 without going bust. This is obviously a risk but most players understand the calculated risks within a game of blackjack, based on strategies and statistics. Of course, if a player goes over 21 after being hit, he goes bust.
Players can Choose to ‘Stand’: When a player is happy with the cards that have been dealt and does not wish to risk being dealt any more cards, he can choose to stand. This means that these are the player’s final cards in the game.
Players can Choose to ‘ Split Pairs’: If players are dealt a pair in the first round, these can be split into two separate hands and another bet, equal to the first, is placed. While various rules pertain to different versions of blackjack, the basic understanding is that hands can only be split once and that only cards of the same denomination can be split (ie. not a queen and a 10, for example).
Players can Choose to ‘Double Down’: If players are in a strong position in the game, they can opt to double their original bet. In return for this right, players are only entitled to one more card. Casinos have varying rules on the doubling down choice.
Player can Choose to ‘Surrender’: If players have been dealt particularly bad cards in the first round, they may want to surrender these cards and forfeit half of their original bet. They are then out of the round and their cards are removed.
Player can Choose to Take ‘Even Money’: Supposing that the dealer has an ace on the upcard and the player is dealt a blackjack, the player can choose to take even money. Essentially, this means that the player will be paid out 1:1 before the dealer checks his or her other card.
Winning at Blackjack
An automatic win for the player is if he is dealt a blackjack on the first round. Payout is 1.5x the original bet.
If the dealer also has a blackjack in the initial round, bets are paid back to the player. This is known as a stand off, tie or push.
If the dealer goes bust, the player automatically wins.
If the player has a lower count than the dealer, he automatically loses.
A higher card count than the dealer’s is paid out as per an equal amount to
the original bet.
Blackjack – Simple and Exciting
Many people are drawn to blackjack because of its simple rules and its classic features. The game has the ideal combination of luck, skill and entertainment and it is no wonder that blackjack is so popular in the gambling world today. Different versions of blackjack, as well as multiplayer online tournaments ensure that blackjack is kept fun and contemporary, without drifting too far from the timeless, original version that has stood the test of time.

As gold and silver flowed out of the Comstock mines in the 1800’s and made its way down to Carson City to the Carson City mint, it was inevitable that gambling would be a part of the city scene. Card and dice games abounded in salons and back rooms and because of the lawless time, losers (or winners) were often shot. But as the days of the Wild West simmered down into respectable cities instead of frontier towns, Carson City became known for three things: The Capitol of Nevada; A historical mining town; and a fun place to visit and gamble.
Thirty miles south of Reno on US-395, Carson City sits in a green valley flanked by the rugged High Sierras. Named after frontier explorer Kit Carson who led explorers to the town in 1858, this capitol city covers 155.7 square miles, small in comparison to other state capitols. But its history is huge and its state museum, once the Carson City Mint, is reason enough to stop and visit. Nowadays, there are many casinos to lure visitors through their doors as well.
The first legal gambling establishment to open in Carson City was The Carson Nugget in 1954 under the ownership of the Hop and Howard Adams and the direction of Richard Graves. Graves said he didn’t know what would happen because Carson City was a sleepy little town with little business, but the casino took right off. Graves worked hard to popularize what is now the oldest continuously operating casino in Carson City. He later founded other Nugget casinos including what later became John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks.
Both the Adams and Graves had moved to Nevada when gambling was banned in their home state of Idaho. The Adams brothers enlarged the original building of The Carson Nugget by buying buildings on the block at the corner of Robinson and Carson Streets. They continued the tradition of offering a free Thanksgiving dinner that Graves started in 1954. The 1980’s were a very busy time for the casino and a 60,000 square-foot expansion was started in 1982. In 1989, the casino had 600 employees, 250 more than it has now.
Currently, the 80,000 square foot casino is owned by Howard Adam’s son, Alan, and Hop’s wife, Mae. Eventually it will be bought by an unnamed developer but the Adams family has said that it will continue to be operated by the Adams family as a nonprofit benefiting local charities.
The Carson Nugget is no longer alone in Carson City. Here are some other popular casinos.
BEST WESTERN CARSON STATION HOTEL-CASINO, 900 South Carson St.
CACTUS JACK’S CASINO, 420 North Carson St.
CASINO FANDANGO, 3800 S. Carson St.
COMSTOCK CASINO, 3680 Goni Road.
GOLD DUST WEST CASINO HOTEL, 2171 Highway 50 East.
SILVER DOLLAR CASINO, 1897 N. Edmonds.
SLOTWORLD, 3879 Highway 50 East.
One thing you won’t find in any of the local casinos is a real silver dollar (except in a display case). The casinos stopped giving out real silver decades ago when the value of a silver dollar became far more than one dollar. For the lucky ones who have CC minted silver dollars, the value is up to $1000.
These days, Carson City casinos are worried about getting any kind of dollars. The economic meltdown has hit the gaming industry hard as people struggle to own homes and feed their families with nothing left over for entertainment. But for a city built on pioneer spirit and Comstock precious metals, it’s a good bet that the good times will return sometime in the future. If you’re going through Carson City, stop and try your luck. It’s been a lucky place for over 150 years.
